Chaplet of the Eight Evangelical Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Chaplet of the Eight Evangelical Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary

For Children Grades 3-6

I was inspired to create this little chaplet for children based on the Chaplet of Ten Evangelical Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary for adults.

“Let the soul of Mary be in each of us to magnify the Lord and the spirit of Mary be in each of us to rejoice in God”   St. Ambrose

This little chaplet of virtues offers Mary as a role model for all to imitate. The best way to know her son Jesus is to know His Blessed Mother. Let Mary be your spiritual mother. Let her guide you to him. Take Her hand and let her show you the way. Trust Her to give you loving comfort even when you sin. Trust Her throughout your lifetime. Always and Forever.

The Virtues are: Pure, Humble, Faithful, Devout, Obedient, Poor, Patient, Hopeful

I offer the Chaplet of the Eight Evangelical Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary in various colour combinations. Each chaplet comes with a prayer page and a plastic storage bag. Sample images and prices are shown below.

Chaplet of St. Therese of the Child Jesus

Known for ‘her little way’, She lived her life doing ordinary things with great love—God’s love. Those who pray for her intercession are often showered with roses.

Patroness of the Missions & Missionaries

Thérèse of Lisieux is famous for her “Little Way”: becoming a saint not by doing great or heroic deeds, but by offering little events and activities of life to God with great love. She looked upon every blessing in life as an expression of God’s love for her and upon every difficulty in life as an opportunity to express her love to Him.

Thérèse of Lisieux was only four years old when her mother died. She was looked after by her four older sisters until two of her eldest sisters joined the Carmelite convent in Lisieux. On Christmas Day, 1886, the young girl experienced a profound conversion. She developed a great love for the missionary life of the Church. Her desire for prayer increased and she constantly begged to join the convent but was too young to take such vows. By special dispensation she entered the Carmelites on April 9, 1888 and was professed on September 8, 1890. For the next seven years she lived a Life of prayer, developing her spirituality by reading the Carmelite mystics and following the austere rules of the order. Thérèse concentrated on doing everything in life, especially the little things, out of love for God and for her neighbours. The abbess forbade Thérèse to fast because she was too young and somewhat frail. Instead, she encouraged her to write, which lead to The Story of the Soul and many other of her texts, including poetry, prayers, plays and plenty of letters. These writings describe how every ‘little life’ (and our routine duties) can be enhanced by faithfulness and love.

Thérèse longed for the opportunity to spread the love of Christ to foreign lands and always prayed for missionaries. Sadly, ¡n 1897, she died from tuberculosis at the age of 24. Pilgrims still flock to Lisieux to venerate St. Thérèse, who is known as Theresa-of-the-Child-Jesus.

Feast Day of St. Thérèse is October 1st.

Chaplet of St. Raymond Nonnatus

Patron of childbirth, children, falsely accused people, fever, infants, midwives, newborn babies, obstetricians and pregnant women.

After much research, I created this chaplet myself, using the prayers of St. Raymond’s Novena.

Raymond was born to a noble family in Spain in 1204. He was delivered by caesarean operation when his mother died in childbirth. He felt drawn to the religious life, joining the Mercedarians. He spent his entire estate ransoming slaves. When his money ran out, he offered himself as hostage for several slaves. He was sentenced to death but spared due to the ransom he would bring. Suffering in captivity, a legend states that the Moors bored a hole through his lips with a hot iron and padlocked his mouth to prevent him from preaching (he converted several guards). He was tortured for continuing his evangelizing activities but was ransomed eight months later. On his return to Barcelona in 1239, he was appointed Cardinal by Pope Gregory IX, but died the following year.

As a ritual, locks are placed at his altar to stop gossip, rumours, false testimonies and bad talk. They are also used to keep secrets, stop cursing or lying and to guard priests who want to protect the secrecy of confession.

The Feast Day of St. Raymond Nonnatus is August 31. His Novena to obtain special favour is especially effective August 23-31.

Chaplet of St. Raphael

His name means “medicine of God” or “Healing power of God”, and he wounds hearts with his arrows of love. He is both a healer and protector.

Patron Saint of the blind, bodily ills, counselors, druggists, eye problems, guardian angels, happy meetings, healers, health inspectors, health technicians, love, lovers, mental illness, nurses, pharmacists, physicians, shepherds, against sickness, therapists, travelers, young people and young people leaving home for the first time.

The angel Raphael appears only in the Book of Tobit. Raphael first appears disguised in human form as the travelling companion of Tobit’s son, Tobiah, calling himself “Azarias the son of the great Ananias”. During the adventurous course of the journey the archangel’s protective influence is shown in many ways including the binding of the demon in the desert of upper Egypt.

After the return and the healing of the blindness of Tobit, Azarias makes himself known. Regarding the healing powers attributed to Raphael, we have his declaration to Tobit that he was sent by the Lord to heal him of his blindness and to deliver Sarah, his future daughter-in-law, from the demon Asmodeus, who abducts and kills every man she marries on their wedding night before the marriage can be consummated.

The Feast Day of St. Raphael is September 29, and is shared with the Archangels St. Michael and St. Gabriel.

Chaplet of St. Peregrine

He wept at the foot of the cross the night before his cancerous foot was to be amputated—the next day his cancer had gone.

Patron Saint of cancer patients, knee problems, and those suffering in prolonged pain.

Peregrine Laziosi was born in 1260 in Forlì, Italy to an affluent family. At that time, Forli was governed by the Pope as part of the Papal States, and Peregrine grew up in a family that was actively involved in the opposition, or anti-papal party. At this time, Mass and the Sacraments could not be celebrated due to the anti-papal activities. St. Philip Benizi, Prior General of the Servants of Mary, went to Forli to preach reconciliation. Young Peregrine with his strong political opinions not only heckled Philip during his preaching, but, struck him. Philip, instead of responding with anger and violence to the attack, turned and forgave Peregrine. This occurrence had a profound effect on Peregrine. He converted to the Catholic faith and was later ordained a priest, establishing a Servite community. He was a victim of a spreading cancer in his foot and was scheduled for an amputation. The night before the operation, he spent in prayer. That night he received a vision of Christ who healed him with a touch. The next morning, Peregrine found his cancer completely healed.

The Feast Day of St. Peregrine is May 1.

Chaplet of St. Patrick

He suffered great hardship throughout his life. He states, “I am a slave in Christ to a foreign nation for the unspeakable glory of the eternal life which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.

Patron Saint and national apostle of Ireland

Patrick grew up between Rivers Clyde and Severn. Irish pirates kidnapped and enslaved him. He escaped after six years of servitude and returned home. His captivity had a deep religious effect on him and he wished to bring Christianity to the Irish people. He studied for the priesthood and was ordained in France. In a dream he heard “the voice of the Irish calling him back” and so he returned to Ireland as a missionary. He was appointed Bishop of Ireland in about AD 435. He divided the country into dioceses and encouraged the beginnings of monastic orders. He devoted himself to spreading Christianity to a people that worshipped the sun. Patrick’s own account of his conversion and missionary life is known as the Confessio. In it he saw himself as a humble instrument in God’s hands, given gifts of wisdom and strength to bring an alien people to the true faith. Through the use of the shamrock emblem, St. Patrick brings us the Holy Trinity.

The Feast Day of St. Patrick is March 17.

Chaplet of St. Monica

Her life is an example of patience, charity, prayer and conversion. For mothers and women.

Patron Saint of alcoholics, alcoholism, difficult marriages, disappointing children, homemakers, housewives, married women, mothers, victims of abuse, victims of adultery, victims of unfaithfulness, victims of verbal abuse, widows and wives.

St. Monica (mother of St. Augustine) was married by arrangement to a pagan official with a violent temper who was critical of Christians and their practices. They had three children; Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Through her patience and prayers, she was able to convert her husband (and his mother) to the Catholic faith in 370. After his death a year later, Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life. Augustine, on the other hand, was living a wayward life, rejecting Christianity. Monica did not lose faith. She continually fasted, prayed, and wept on his behalf praying for him unceasingly for 17 years. Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387. St. Monica died later that same year. Her son Augustine later became St. Augustine. Her life is illustrated through his writings.

The Feast Day of St. Monica is August 27.

I have made a second prayer page to this chaplet. The first is the original set of prayers that make up this bead strand that focus on mothers and their children. I recognize that all women may not be mothers, so the second prayer page focuses on women and wives with coinciding prayers.

Chaplet of St. Michael

He will defend you against the powers of hell and he judges the souls seeking entry into heaven.

Patron Saint of ambulance drivers, bakers, mariners, paramedics, police officers, soldiers and battles.

The Archangel Michael saved heaven by vanquishing the devil who was intruding while disguised as a dragon. He fought the devil when war broke out in heaven. Michael defeated the beast and the angels siding with it, so he was given the right to judge souls seeking entry into heaven. He is considered the protector of Israel in the Old Testament “always interceding for the human race”.

A devout Servant of God, Antonia d’Astonac, had a vision of St. Michael. He told Antonia to honour him by nine salutations to the nine Choirs of Angels. St. Michael promised that whoever would practice this devotion in his honour would have, when approaching Holy Communion, an escort of nine angels chosen from each of the nine Choirs. In addition, for those who would recite the Chaplet daily, he promised his continual assistance and the assistance of all holy angels during one’s life.

The Feast Day of St. Michael is September 29, and is shared with the Archangels St. Gabriel and St. Raphael.

Chaplet of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

A Marian prayer strand. The Carmelites built a monastery atop Mt Carmel and dedicated it to the Virgin Mary the “Star of the Sea” . Queen of Carmel has always faithfully watched and protected her children on earth.

Mount Carmel is a well known ridge in Palestine overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Richly forested and fertile, known for not only its flowering pastures and sheltering caves but also for wine and oil production during ancient times. It is also a strategic site for defense as it looks down upon its shores. The mount is known as the place of a contest between Elijah and 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah (both false gods). Berthold, the founder of the Carmelite religious order came from France to Mount Carmel, built a small chapel soon joined by hermits in imitation of Elijah. After his death, St. Brocard became leader who formeed the Order of Carmelites in the 12th century. A monastery was built and it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary as ‘Star of the Sea’ – a medieval title describing the mother of Christ as the cloud of life that dwells over the sea promising rain and fertility. According to Carmelite tradition, a scapular—a small piece of rough wool cloth, was given to St. Simon Stock (General of the Order in Europe) by Mary. On July 16, 1251, he prayed to Mary that his order could be saved from its oppression. She appeared to him with the scapular in hand, saying “Take, beloved son this scapular of thy order as a badge of my   confraternity and for thee and all Carmelites a special sign of grace; whoever dies in this garment will not suffer everlasting fire. It is the sign of salvation, a safeguard in   dangers, a pledge of peace and of the covenant”. Throughout the ages, the Queen of Carmel has always kept a faithful watch over the destinies of Her cherished children on earth.

The Feast Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is July 16 and honours the foundation of the Carmelite religious order in the 12th century.

Chaplet for the Holy Souls

This chaplet is known as the “Chaplet for the Dead”, but I changed the name of this out of respect for the loving souls who have gone before us and to those of us they have left behind. This is not to be mistaken for another chaplet for Holy Souls that is much longer, with a different set of prayers.

This chaplet consists of four decades as well as the Acts of Faith, Hope and Charity. Prayer for the dead is one of the greatest acts of charity we can perform. Our prayers help the deceased during their time in Purgatory, so that they can enter more quickly into the fullness of heaven. Recitation of the Acts enables one to enter into prayer and reach awareness of the presence of God. Those who devote themselves to this chaplet are performing a work which is very acceptable to God and very useful to the holy soul in Purgatory. At the same time, those reciting these prayers are open to receiving God’s many graces as well.

A beautiful chaplet that honours Mary as well, reciting “Sweet Heart of Mary, be my Salvation” on the Ave beads.
