Certain beads that come across my beading table call out to be a decade rosary of ten beads rather than a full rosary of 53 beads. This smaller chaplet fits nicely in your hand or pocket. Larger beads made of glass or wood are perfect. I add a woolen cross on the end, or a woolen rose to finish it off. Flat polished stones offer a change as well. The smoothness of the rock can add to your meditation practice. I continually make different options when needs beads find their way to me.
The rosary is a beautiful devotion. For some, 53 beads are just too many. I create decade rosary bead strands, usually 10 beads plus one extra bead sitting above the cross (an Our Father bead) allowing you to recite as many decades as you are able. It’s smaller size fits in your hand or pocket nicely. For those new to the rosary, it is especially helpful as it does not overwhelm. One decade at a time. And for those who are familiar with the devotion and uninterested, it offers a new approach. I am able to use bigger beads than I would for a full rosary so it looks quite different. One decade at a time might allow you to eventually complete a whole five decade rosary!
